When the Winter Arc starts

The Winter Arc starts on 1 October by convention and runs to the end of the year. Strictly, 1 October to 31 December is 92 days, and a hard 90-day count lands on 29 December — “90 days” is branding, not arithmetic. The calculator below maps any start date.

The 90-versus-92 problem

“The Winter Arc is 90 days” and “the Winter Arc is October to New Year” cannot both be exactly true, and nobody minds. October, November and December add up to 92 days. A strict 90-day count from 1 October lands on 29 December — an odd evening to declare victory, two days before the year does it for you. In practice almost everyone runs the arc to New Year's Eve and lets “90” be branding.

Pick your convention on day one and write it on the checklist. This page's calculator shows both: the exact 90-day mark and the run-to-New-Year length.

What actually falls inside the window

An arc that starts on 1 October does not fail in October. The calendar tells you where it will be tested:

Starting late is fine; starting vague is not. A 1 November start gives 61 days to New Year — a real arc, if you write slightly fewer rules. What does not work is “I will start once things calm down”: things do not calm down, they Christmas.

Before or after the season

Outside autumn, the same mechanics still run — a 90-day block with your own rules is a 90-day block. But you lose the two things the season contributes free of charge: the world quietening down around you, and the cohort effect of everyone locking in on the same date. If it is currently spring and you want a fixed-rule container instead, 75 Soft works in any season, and the 75-day calculator maps those dates the same way this one maps the arc.

Questions people actually ask

Do I have to start on 1 October?

No, but the shared date is half the mechanism — a cohort of people locking in at once, the way January works for resolutions. Starting mid-season still works; you simply run a shorter arc that ends with the year.

Is the Winter Arc 90 or 92 days?

Both numbers are defensible. October, November and December together are 92 days; the “90-day” label rounds down. Pick one convention on day one — this page's calculator counts an exact 90 — and stop thinking about it.

When does Winter Arc 2026 end?

31 December 2026 if you run it with the calendar, or 29 December 2026 if you count a strict 90 days from 1 October. Most people run to New Year's Eve — ending an arc two days before the year ends is a strange place to stop.

Can I start in November?

Yes. A 1 November start gives 61 days to the year's end — call it a short arc and write slightly fewer rules. Two months of held habits beats a perfect 90-day plan scheduled for “next year”.
