Winter Arc vs 75 Hard

75 Hard gives you five fixed daily rules, no alcohol, and a restart from day one if you miss anything. The Winter Arc gives you a season — 1 October to New Year — and asks you to write your own rules with no restart clause. They are different bets on how change happens.

Two different bets

Strip the branding and these are two theories of how change happens.

75 Hard bets on the line. All decisions were made for you in 2019; your only job is obedience to them, and the restart clause makes the line mean something. The program is open that the discomfort is the product. What it trains — genuinely — is the experience of not negotiating with yourself for 75 days.

The arc bets on the season. Dark evenings and a thinned-out calendar lower the cost of every habit, the shared 1 October start supplies a cohort, and the year's end supplies a finish line nobody can move. What it trains is programme design: writing rules for your own life and running them without a referee. Which is also its known failure mode — most people write their rules too soft, and there is nobody to object.

December decides it. Run the thought experiment before choosing: it is 20 December, third event of the week, and someone hands you a glass. On 75 Hard that glass is day zero — 60 days erased. On the arc it is either within your rules or one crossed box on the tracker. Neither answer is wrong. But you already know which one you will actually live with, and that answer, not ambition in August, is the honest basis for the choice.

Who should pick which

The 18 October trick

The two are not mutually exclusive: 75 Hard started on 18 October puts day 75 on 31 December. Hard's fixed rules running inside the arc's season, cohort and finish line — the most elegant version of both, and the most brutal, because the entire alcohol ban lands on the party season. People genuinely do this. Check what your December contains on the dates page before you decide to be one of them, and if the answer is “a wedding” — see how Soft compares instead.

Questions people actually ask

Which is harder, Winter Arc or 75 Hard?

75 Hard, by design — two daily workouts, a gallon of water, zero alcohol through the party season, and one miss erases everything. The Winter Arc is as hard as the rules you write, which is precisely its risk: most people write theirs too soft.

Is the Winter Arc just an easier 75 Hard?

No — the mechanism differs. 75 Hard outsources all decisions to Andy Frisella's rule set and trains obedience to it. The arc makes you the programme designer, which trains judgement. Failing each one teaches you a different lesson.

Can I run 75 Hard as my Winter Arc?

Yes, and there is a neat way to do it: start 75 Hard on 18 October and day 75 lands on 31 December. You get Hard's fixed rules inside the arc's season — though the December alcohol ban is where most of those attempts end.

Which gets better results?

The one you finish, which is not a platitude — it is the entire decision. If your December calendar has three parties and a family trip, Hard's restart clause turns any of them into day zero. The arc absorbs them and keeps moving.
